Because he's one of the only relatively talented rappers to go mainstream. His early stuff was pretty good, his new stuff is garbage. He doesn't say anything particularly clever or meaningful, he just spits nonsensical bullshit really fast with a good flow. Meanwhile, Kool G Rap, Big Pun, Big L, Nas, etc. are (or were in the case of the dead ones)miles ahead of him lyrically but aren't as marketable.
